Baueda 15mm Scale Italian Tower

Baueda's Excellent 15mm Scale Italian Tower

On 5th January 2017 Baueda finally announced that the pre-production one piece Italian Tower was available to pre-order. See http://www.baueda.com/15medieval.html#10TOW to order. Please note I am not connected to Baueda in any way. Since I have a few Italian Medieval army options I knew I had to have one, but I ordered two because I was unsure if I would want two and I can experiment in how I painted them. I already have two JR Mini's Italian towers which I have previously blogged so decided that I would paint one of the towers to match these. See here for that blog entry http://drewjarman.blogspot.co.uk/2016/08/jr-miniatures-italian-medieval-tower.html

Anyway back to the Baueda review. I ordered the towers and some other items and waited for them to arrive getting on with other painting items in the mean time. About a week later the towers etc turned up, their usual excellent service.

As with all resincast items they needed some cleaning up but because I ordered some of the first out of the moulds they were very crisp with very little problem areas. A quick clean up of air bubbles and a good wash in washing up liquid and a toothbrush had them prepared for painting. I then put them aside whilst I cleared other items off the workbench.

It wasnt until yesterday that I was finally able to make a start on the towers having black undercoated them last week during some down time when I was waiting for other painted items to dry.

The towers fit onto a 40mm x 40mm base with no problems and the flared top means that you can also easily fit in a 40mm c 40mm based element of artillery or anything else that takes your fancy.

The tower dimensions are [excluding my own base addition] 49mm wide at the top and 76mm tall [approx]. The brickwork detail lines are quite fine and care must be taken not to lose them when painting the casting. I used a watered down black undercoat and coated it twice. On the Baueda website he used a stone tower finish and I did comment to him that I thought that red brick would be more historically accurate. Since the tower isn't based on any particular real life tower but a composition creation [AFAIK] for wargames use I Googled for images for ideas and drew inspiration from the towers in Lucca, Lazise, Piedmont, Brisighella, Florence and Torgiano.

I painted the other tower a slightly different way to mirror other towers I have seen pictures of and to give them a larger proportion of visible corner stones in a limestone colour.

The tower took me about three hours to paint in all with drying times taking into account and another 15 minutes to hand varnish to protect it. I am very pleased with the final effect of the tower and recommend that no Italian army or combat in Italy from the 12th Century onwards would be complete without at least one tower!

Pictures of the second tower are now after the first tower.

Post Mongol Russians - Part 1

Post Mongol Russians - Part 1

Another Accidental Army. Last year I saw a very cheap Russian army on Ebay Listed as a Mongolian Muscovite Army. I did and paid £100 for it which given the quality of the mounted figures I obtained was quite a good price. There isnt enough figures to put it on the table just yet but I sorted through the infantry & rebased them to make better use of the figures. There are some leftover figures that will probably end up in my spares draw or sold on as generic elements once I get around to them.

Cossack Archers Irr Ps O

Cossack Handgunners Irr Ps S

Russian Handgunners Reg Art X

Mixed Russian Cavalry

Mixed Light Cavalry awaiting repair etc

2023 Figures to date

Bronze Age Warriors - Minoan Part 5

Minoans - Part 5

After taking the summer off from painting I finally managed to finish off another 12 elements of Minoan Pk [X]. These should enable me to field sufficient infantry at 500 AP. This leaves me with the Chariots left to do which I have been putting off as I just cant face them at the moment. Once I get in the mood I will knock them out in batches to avoid another bout of fatigue.

Thats all to blog for now

This brings the painting tally so far for 2022 to
288 foot [84 elements]
9 Feature Pieces [9 elements]
20 Baggage Elements
24 rebased Infantry elements

15mm Anyscale Resin Tents - Part 3

15mm Anyscale Resin Tents For Sale

Back in November 2019 I blogged about painting up Anyscale Resin Tents to sell. I have finally painted up the last 12 tents I have for sale.

They are simple enough to be totally generic for use with almost any army and period,

1st  Batch of 6 tents

2nd Batch of six tents

Last up are some LaserCraftArt animal pens which I have had waiting to be completed for a few years! They are simple MDF baggage type elements idea to use to indicate where livestock might be contained within an army encampment

Bronze Age Warriors - Minoan Part 4

Minoans Part 4

Having got fed up painting Minoan Infantry I decided to paint up the few missing items that really make for a good looking army. I got a friend to 3D print the specific items as I cannot justify purchasing a 3D printer.

Knossos was the capital city of Minoan Crete. The city pre-dates the Minoans by quite a long time frame. Its been the subject of multiple excavations over the last 150 years.

I wanted a Built Up Area to act as a feature piece if I ended up defending Minoa. I had considered scratch building a feature but struck it lucky when I found exactly the item I wanted on this 3D printed Items site.

The item is inspired by this structure in Crete.

My friend Dave found the 3D models and he kindly gave me the four missing Triakonters I needed to complete the Minoans. The ships come on their own bases so I had to put them on larger bases and build up the surface so the galleys blend into the sea. The are available to download from here.

They painted up really well and using Vallejo Sandy Paste for the sea was just rough enough to be painted etc to look like it was sea.

No Minoan Army would be complete without a Minotaur. I decided to make mine a huge bronze statue. I got it from Thingiverse https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3456137

I asked for two 3D prints because I might end up selling one on. They are on standard 40mm x 40mm bases so can be used as baggage elements

Over Xmas 2021 Dave at Museum Miniatures announced that he was providing a free STL file of a Trojan Horse. He had no plans to sell it as the model is far too large but is perfect for 3D printing.

Here is his publicity shot from the company Facebook page.

I got two printed out by my mate Dave and have tried two different colour schemes.
