Rebasing Old 15mm Figures

Old Ancient Figures Rebased Ready For Sale

As part of my ongoing Project Lead Mountain I am aiming to not only paint up all of my outstanding 15mm ancients era metal but also refurbish older figures in my own collection either to keep or resell.

Having decided I needed a little break from endless painting I had a trawl through the figure storage to see what is next in the queue for the new base treatment.

First up were four bases of Classical Era Slingers. They were based on thin card that had started to warp and this was covered with two different types of fine sand meaning that none of the elements actually matched. Having rebased them I now have a small Slinger Battlegroup which is on EBay for sale. The bases are my usual magnetised MDF bases finished off with Vallejo Earth Brown paste, edged in Raw Umber paint and completed with gravel, flower and static grass tufts and a fresh coat of matt spray sealer. The end result is quite nice considering how old these Minifigs castings are.

Next up are 24 Mikes Models Dark Age archers. I am not sure which figure codes they are and I have not listed them for sale yet. They have a bit of minor damage to a few of the bows which I can easily retouch if I do decide to sell them. I ended up storing them in my Welsh army collection because I had room and they are suitable to go alongside the spearmen.

New Additions From Project Lead Mountain

New Elements From Project Lead Mountain

As part of the ongoing battle to clear out my unpainted metal and after I had decided to rebase some very old figures from 24 years ago [see previous blog entry] I found two more bags of figures to paint that would be ideal to replace the older figures in my collection and sell them on.

I still cannot recall why I ended up with these figures or even when I purchased them because I know I didn't need them as I already had enough figures for the purpose in my armies already.

I had 24 slingers and 22 archers [with cloak] they are both Essex Miniatures castings but I cannot ID the figure codes now and think they may have been replaced. The figures as is usual for Essex were cleanly cast with minimal flash to clean up. They didn't take too long to paint either once I got the production line started.

Refurbishing Old 15mm Ancients Figures As Part Of Project Lead Mountain

Bringing Life Back Into Old Figures

As part of Project Lead Mountain I am also slowing working through older figures and rebasing them as when I first started 15mm Ancients gaming back under DBM v1.2 in 1994 I just covered the entire base with static grass. Whilst this was the standard 24 years ago time and techniques have moved on along with what's available to buy as basing materials. After all this time the bases were also becoming very bald and the figures looked dreadful as a result but at least they were not on plain unpainted green card which I still sometimes see on the tabletop at tournaments.

The figures were originally painted to use with my Marian Romans and as I expanded my collection they of course ended up being used in other armies as appropriate. Removing the old basing materials did not take too long considering how many figures I decided to rebase in one go. I rebased sixteen elements of Psiloi in all and I am quite pleased with the end result and have decided to sell them on via EBay because whilst doing this i found two more bags of unpainted figures that I will now use to replace them [see next post].

They are all Essex Miniatures castings and I cannot recall the figure codes after all this time I think they may well be discontinued castings from the MPA range having be resculpted.

I will be selling them on EBay in due course.

More Ancient Camptastic Elements

Yet More 15mm Scale Baggage Elements

I was asked by a clubmate if I could provide him with a pair of Medieval tents for his Condotta army. Whilst I don't tend to keep a supply of spare baggage elements for sale or to paint being the sort of person whose happy to help out a mate I went online and checked EBay for suitable tents. First stop was searching for Baueda. It instantly came up with some items and I placed a large order for two suitable tents for the Condotta, two more for my Attalid Pergamene, two more for my Abbasids and six more for my Polish/Serbian army.

I have not painted all of them apart from the batch of six for the Polish/Serbian army and also took the time to rebase some old Hovels Bell Tents as well as some old Medieval supply wagons.

First up are the Baueda items:
I removed the shields from the top of the canopy as requested so they can be completely generic.
They are sold as Medieval Tents.

Next are the last two missing elements to complete my Attalid Pergamene Baggage.
They are sold as Ottoman tents.

Baueda 15OTM

These are for use with my Abbasid Army and Arab Conquest.
They are sold as Persian Tents.

Baueda 15PRS

Having finished my missing Attalid Pergamene tents this has allowed me to dispose of my original tents for this army.
They are sold as Greek tents. They will go on EBay in due course.

Now for the odds and sods.

I purchased some Hovels Bell Tents many years ago, they are now discontinued. I still have all eight but have been painting them up differently for use with odd armies. These were in poor condition basing wise so I repainted two of them in red and rebased all four of them to freshen them up.

These wagons came as part of a EBay purchase of Angry Peasants. They were on very old style flock basing and each base was a very odd size. I have no use for them at all but decided that they were worth the effort to rebase so I could then sell them on via EBay.

There were three small empty wagons and one large laden wagen. All of them are ox drawn and suitable for use in almost any European army from 500 AD onwards. I have no idea what make they are but after rebasing and a fresh coat of sprat Matt varnish they have come up much better than I had hope for. I based them following the usual DBx style as this seems to be almost universal nowadays
